Zum führen eines Schiffes mit mehr als 6 kW Antriebsleistung oder ein Segelschiff mit mehr als 15 m2 Segelfläche wird in der Schweiz ein Schiffsführerausweis benötigt. 
Dazu ist eine theoretische wie auch praktische Bootsprüfung abzulegen. 
Die Theorieprüfung für Motorboot wie auch Segelschiff ist die selbe und wird in der ganzen Schweiz mit den gleichen Theoriefragen durchgeführt. 
Für die Durchführung der theoretischen Bootsprüfung sind die Schifffahrtsämter der Wohnkantone zuständig.

Important information 
To operate a ship with more than 6 kW drive power or a sailing ship with more than 15 m2 sail area, a skipper's license is required in Switzerland.
To do this, a theoretical as well as a practical boat test must be taken.
The theory test for motor boats and sailing ships is the same and is carried out throughout Switzerland with the same theory questions.
The shipping offices of the cantons of residence are responsible for carrying out the theoretical boat test.
